Motivated by creative thinking and cooperation, individual HMPs have pioneered new approaches to reach their goals of prevention.
In 2006, tobacco treatment training for Good Will Hinkley in Skowhegan was a result of a call from a school nurse to PTM asking about resource materials to help the school become tobacco free. By contracting with the American Lung Association of Maine, ten staff members learned about the issues around tobacco addiction and treatment and how to introduce a youth cessation program. Good Will Hinkley proceeded to implement plans for a tobacco-free campus with PTMs support.
At Kennebec Valley Mental Health Center, the idea that smoking is an unfortunate necessity for those with mental illness is being shattered. KVMHC decided to thwart those attitudes and go smoke free, and to educate clients about the risk of smoking.
An effort by Loring Job Corp is waging an effective battle against tobacco with The Power of Prevention. Since its kickoff in 2004, 15 employees became tobacco free and cessation efforts have been implemented among hundreds of students.
