Maine Puts a Stop to Underage Tobacco Sales

Twenty-seven thousand Maine kids who are currently under the age of 18 will ultimately die prematurely from smoking. That’s why the state of Maine has passed tough laws to block underage tobacco sales. As a retailer, you play a critical role in helping reduce the use of tobacco by our state’s youth.

Sale of tobacco products, including cigarettes, chewing tobacco, snuff, cigars, pipes and rolling papers is prohibited to anyone under 18. All employees must ask for and examine ID and refuse sale to those under 18 – or they could be fined up to $1,500 and lose their job.

Read the Maine Law for Retail Stores.
Section 1555-D "Illegal delivery of tobacco products" has been struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court as preempted by federal law.

Help the Mission of Prevention in Maine

The NO BUTS! (Blocking Underage Tobacco Sales) program was created jointly by the Maine State Attorney General's Office and PTM in an effort to remind employers, managers and employees that, along with stiff fines and penalties for selling tobacco to underage consumers, there is a compelling public health incentive for blocking tobacco sales to minors. The program also rewards retailers who are doing a good job by recognizing efforts and factoring in participation and compliance records should a violation occur.
